Stop Watering Your Christmas Cactus At This Time If You Want It To Thrive

Stop Watering During Dormancy Christmas cacti typically enter dormancy in the fall and early winter (around late October to early November). During this period, it’s important to reduce watering to help the plant conserve energy for blooming.

Cut Back on Watering Before Budding For optimal blooming, cut back on watering about 2-3 weeks before you expect buds to form. Less frequent watering triggers the plant's natural cycle, encouraging flower production.

Avoid Overwatering During the Winter Month Overwatering during dormancy can lead to root rot and poor health. Keep the soil slightly moist during this period, but avoid soaking the roots. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Reintroduce Watering Once Flowers Appear Once the buds start to form and the plant resumes active growth (usually in mid to late winter), gradually reintroduce watering. Water the cactus thoroughly, ensuring the water drains well from the pot.

Proper Light and Temperature In addition to watering, adjust light and temperature during dormancy. Keep the plant in a cool, dark environment (about 50-55°F) for 12-14 hours each night to trigger blooming. This can be key to getting beautiful flowers.

Don't Water Immediately After Blooms Start After blooming begins, don’t rush to water the plant immediately. Wait until the soil starts to dry out before watering again. Overwatering can stunt the growth of newly opened flowers.

To help your Christmas cactus thrive, reduce watering during its dormant phase in late fall and early winter. Only resume regular watering once buds begin to form, and always ensure the soil is dry before watering again.
