The King George VI Chase is one of the most exciting races in British horse racing, and this year, there’s a lot of buzz. After a long drought, French trainers are hoping to break the streak and win the famous race. With some strong horses in the mix, especially from France, this year’s competition is expected to be one of the most thrilling in recent memory.
French Trainers Eyeing Victory
For the first time in years, French trainers are feeling confident about winning the King George VI Chase. The race has been tough for French horses since the last win in 2000, when trainer François Doumen won with First Gold. This year, three horses from France are seen as strong contenders, with a big focus on Il Est Francais.
Il Est Francais
Il Est Francais, trained by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm in northern France, is the most promising of the French trio. Last year, he amazed everyone by winning the Kauto Star Novices Chase at Kempton by an impressive 11 lengths. Despite having problems with bursting blood vessels during races, the trainers are hopeful he can race at his best.
Noel George says, “If it goes the way it went last year, with no health problems, then I think he’ll be very difficult to beat.”
General En Chef and Juntos Ganamos
Besides Il Est Francais, the French also have General En Chef and Juntos Ganamos, who are both expected to perform well. General En Chef recently showed great potential with a strong fourth-place finish at Newbury, while trainer David Cottin believes Juntos Ganamos has the class to compete at the highest level.
The British and Irish Challengers
While the French have strong horses, there are also plenty of top competitors from the UK and Ireland.
Bravemansgame
Bravemansgame, the 2022 winner of the King George, is looking to defend his title. Trained by Paul Nicholls, he aims for a record-extending 14th victory for his trainer. Along with Grey Dawning and L’Homme Presse, Bravemansgame is one of the main British contenders this year.
Spillane’s Tower
From Ireland, Spillane’s Tower is also a big contender. Trainer Jimmy Mangan believes this horse is the best he’s ever trained. Even though Mangan has a small stable of just 12 horses, his big wins, like Monty’s Pass in the 2003 Grand National, show that he knows how to get the best out of his horses.
Grey Dawning
Grey Dawning is another strong British entry. He impressed as one of last year’s best novice chasers and will now compete against senior horses. His trainer, Dan Skelton, believes that Grey Dawning is still improving and can do even better this season.
The 2024 King George VI Chase promises to be a thrilling race, with strong challengers from both France and Britain. French horses like Il Est Francais, General En Chef, and Juntos Ganamos are ready to end France’s long wait for victory, while top British horses like Bravemansgame and Grey Dawning are determined to hold on to the title. With so much competition, fans are in for an exciting race!
