The legacy of Kentucky Derby winner Mage has officially begun with the birth of his first foal—a bay colt with a strong pedigree and a bright future. Born to stakes-placed mare Lil Miss Moonlight at Machmer Hall in Paris, Kentucky, this colt represents the start of an exciting new chapter for Mage’s career as a stallion.
Mage’s First Foal: A Colt to Celebrate
Breeders Carrie and Craig Brogden, along with Dr. Sandra Fubini, proudly announced the arrival of Mage’s first foal. The colt, born at Machmer Hall, is out of Lil Miss Moonlight, a stakes-placed mare by City of Light. This was her first pregnancy, making this foal a milestone for both Mage and the mare.
Lil Miss Moonlight comes from an impressive bloodline herself. She is a Malibu Moon mare and a half-sister to the top European miler Taareef. She was purchased at the 2023 Keeneland November sale and sent to Mage for her first covering.
Carrie Brogden shared her excitement: “We’re absolutely thrilled with our Mage colt. He’s got such a classy look with a beautiful head, strong shoulder, and a big hip. To have a colt by a Kentucky Derby winner is a dream come true!”
Mage’s Historic Racing Career
Mage’s racing story is one for the history books. As a Kentucky Derby winner, he joined Apollo and Justify as one of only three horses to win the prestigious race without having raced as a 2-year-old. Mage also tied Justify’s record by winning the Derby in just his fourth career start.
Mage was bred in Kentucky by Grandview Equine and raced by a partnership of OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing, and Commonwealth Thoroughbreds. His victory in the 2023 Derby solidified his place in racing history, and his achievements on the track have set high expectations for his offspring.
A Legacy Backed by Stellar Pedigree
Mage’s family tree adds to the anticipation surrounding his progeny. His full-brother, Dornoch, has mirrored Mage’s success, earning Eclipse finalist honors after a stellar 2024 season that included wins in the Haskell (G1) and Belmont Stakes. Their dam, Puca, is considered a top contender for the 2024 Broodmare of the Year award.
Retired to Airdrie Stud in 2024, Mage quickly became one of the most sought-after first-season stallions. He covered 171 mares in his debut season and will stand for a $25,000 stud fee in 2025.
What This Means for Racing Fans
Mage’s first foal marks the start of a new legacy for the Kentucky Derby winner. With his impressive racing history and exceptional bloodlines, Mage is poised to produce top-tier racehorses. Breeders, fans, and the racing community will watch closely as his offspring grow and eventually take to the track.
The combination of Mage’s speed and determination with Lil Miss Moonlight’s strong lineage makes this colt one to watch in the future. As Mage continues his stud career, the excitement surrounding his potential as a sire will only grow.
