Kentucky Derby Watch: First Resort Posts Fastest Workout at Turfway Park

The road to the Kentucky Derby is heating up, and First Resort is making headlines with an impressive workout. On Monday morning, the talented colt clocked the fastest five-furlong time of the day at Turfway Park. His time of 59.4 seconds was the quickest among 10 horses working the same distance, showing he is in top form leading up to the big race.

A Look at First Resort’s Racing History

Trained by Eoin Harty, First Resort is a homebred owned by Godolphin. His pedigree is impressive—he is a son of Uncle Mo and out of Fair Maiden, a Grade 1-winning mare also trained by Harty. First Resort made a strong debut last July, winning a dirt sprint at Ellis Park. He then finished second in the Saratoga Special (G2) behind Showcase. His only race outside the top three was a fourth-place finish in the Summer Stakes (G1) at Woodbine.

In his most recent start, First Resort claimed victory in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs on November 30. Since then, he has been steadily training, with five workouts leading up to this latest bullet drill.

Kentucky Derby Odds: Where Does First Resort Stand?

As of Sunday, First Resort’s odds for the Kentucky Derby sat at 50-1 in Caesars’ futures book in Las Vegas. This is slightly longer than the 45-1 odds he had the week prior. His odds are also similar to his closing price of 49-1 in the third Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, which ended on January 19.

Other Notable Kentucky Derby Hopefuls in Training

First Resort isn’t the only horse working hard in preparation for the Derby. Here are two other contenders who put in strong workouts on Monday:

Romanesque

  • Pedigree: Son of Practical Joke
  • Latest Workout: Five furlongs in 1:00.0 at Santa Anita (second fastest of 29 horses)
  • Last Race: Finished second in the San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita on January 4
  • Trainer: Bob Baffert

Tiztastic

  • Pedigree: Son of Tiz the Law
  • Latest Workout: Five furlongs in 1:00.0 at Oaklawn (fastest of seven horses)
  • Last Race: Finished third in the Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn on January 25
  • Trainer: Steve Asmussen

With the Kentucky Derby just a few months away, First Resort is proving to be a serious contender. His strong workouts suggest he is in great shape, and his past performances show he has the talent to compete. However, with his odds sitting at 50-1, bettors and fans will be watching closely to see how he progresses in the coming weeks.

For now, First Resort’s connections will likely look for the best race to test his Derby potential. Will he continue to impress on the Derby trail? Only time will tell, but his latest workout is certainly a positive sign.
