Trainer José D’Angelo has made a name for himself in 2024, standing out as one of the top trainers in the U.S. and Canada. This holiday week, he’s in the spotlight again, showcasing two star horses in major races. From Bentornato competing in the Malibu Stakes to Twirling Queen taking on the Abundantia Stakes, here’s a look at the highlights of his busy and exciting week.
D’Angelo’s Big Week: Coast-to-Coast Racing
Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita
On Thursday, D’Angelo will head to California for the $300,000 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park’s opening day. One of the most exciting races of the season, the Malibu will feature Bentornato, a Breeders’ Cup Sprint runner-up and Grade 2 winner, going up against a strong field, including Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
Bentornato has had an incredible year, and fans are eager to see if he can claim victory in this prestigious race.
Abundantia Stakes at Gulfstream Park
D’Angelo will return to Gulfstream Park on Saturday to saddle Twirling Queen in the $115,000 Abundantia Stakes. Since joining D’Angelo’s barn last winter, Twirling Queen has proven to be a turf racing star. She has won five of her six starts and remains undefeated on the turf, with three wins.
D’Angelo describes Twirling Queen as “exciting,” and her track record backs it up. Her victories include major stakes like the Mamzelle Stakes and Coronation Cup, with her latest triumph coming at Del Mar in the Senator Ken Maddy.
Spotlight on Twirling Queen
Twirling Queen’s transformation under D’Angelo’s guidance has been impressive. The filly started her career in the Midwest on main tracks but found her stride on the turf at Gulfstream. D’Angelo noted her natural talent early on, saying, “She won her first race at Churchill Downs, and that’s not easy.”
After a short rest following her Del Mar victory, Twirling Queen is back and ready to race. Despite a less-than-ideal post position (12), she’s in top form and will face a competitive field. Key challengers include:
- Mrs. Gambolini: A consistent winner on turf, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.
- Inaboutago: With three wins in four turf starts, she’s one to watch.
- Karaya: A Gulfstream winner on Tapeta, now switching to turf with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
Other Gulfstream Highlights
Saturday’s action at Gulfstream Park will also feature the $165,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes. The field includes notable names like White Abarrio, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner. White Abarrio will use this race as preparation for the Pegasus World Cup Invitational on January 25.
José D’Angelo’s strong finish to 2024 showcases his exceptional training skills and ability to guide top-tier horses to success. From Bentornato’s Malibu Stakes challenge to Twirling Queen’s quest to maintain her turf-winning streak, these races promise excitement for horse racing fans. With major stakes like the Pegasus World Cup on the horizon, D’Angelo’s momentum is set to continue into 2025.
