Gulfstream Park, a popular horse racing venue, has announced some important changes to its betting system starting Wednesday, January 1. These updates will impact how the Early Pick 5 and Late Pick 5 bets work. Here’s everything you need to know in simple terms.
What’s Changing with the Early Pick 5?
The Early Pick 5 is a betting option where players try to predict the winners of the first five races of the day. Here’s what’s new:
- No Consolation Payoffs: If someone correctly picks all five winners, there will no longer be any consolation prize for tickets with fewer correct picks.
- Daily Payout Rules: All the money in the pool will go to the tickets with the most correct picks, paid out every day without any carryover.
What’s Changing with the Late Pick 5?
The Late Pick 5 applies to races later in the day and also has new rules:
- No Consolation Prizes Ever: Even if no one picks all five winners, there won’t be smaller payouts for fewer correct picks.
- Carryover System: If no one gets all five correct, the entire prize pool will roll over to the next race day. This means the prize grows bigger for the next set of bets.
Tropical Turf Pick 3 Remains the Same
The Tropical Turf Pick 3 will stay as is. This bet lets players choose winners for three specific races and has a $3 base minimum.
- Player-Friendly Takeout: The bet still has a low 15% takeout (the percentage Gulfstream keeps from the pool).
- Big Payouts: During the recent 2023-24 Championship Meet, average payouts were about $1,200, and the pool size often hit $70,000.
Additional Updates for Bettors
Gulfstream is also using new technology to improve the betting experience:
- Projected Odds: Each race will show estimated final odds using BETMIX handicapping software. This helps bettors make more informed choices by predicting how the odds might look by race time.
Why These Changes Matter
These updates are meant to simplify betting rules and make Gulfstream’s offerings more competitive and engaging for players. The no-consolation payout system, especially in the Late Pick 5, could result in larger carryover pools, attracting more attention from serious bettors.
