The Kentucky Derby excitement is building, and one standout contender, Ferocious, is making waves during training at Gulfstream Park. This article dives into his recent workouts, potential next races, and what makes this talented colt a strong prospect for the big day.
Ferocious Impresses in Gulfstream Workout
Ferocious, a talented 3-year-old colt, recently clocked an impressive time during a four-furlong workout at Gulfstream Park. Under Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, he breezed through in 48.15 seconds, ranking fifth out of 27 horses.
Assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. shared his excitement about the colt’s progress. “He looks good. Everyone is happy with him,” Delgado said, noting that Ferocious started galloping about five weeks ago and has been steadily improving.
A Look Back at Ferocious’s Racing Career
Ferocious has already made a name for himself as a racehorse to watch. Purchased for $1.3 million last March, he debuted with a 7 ¾-length victory at Saratoga in August. Since then:
- Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes: Finished second to Chancer McPatrick, an Eclipse Award finalist.
- Breeders’ Futurity (G1): Placed second despite some challenges at the gate.
- Breeders’ Cup Juvenile: Came in fifth in this competitive race at Del Mar.
What’s Next for Ferocious?
While the next race for Ferocious hasn’t been decided, the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) on February 1 is one possibility. This 1 1/16-mile race is part of Gulfstream’s path to the Florida Derby (G1) on March 29.
“We’re not rushing him,” Delgado said. “We’ll decide after his next breeze if he’s ready for the Holy Bull or needs more time. Today’s workout went well, but he’ll train with a workmate next week for a better evaluation.”
Other Kentucky Derby Contenders
Ferocious isn’t the only horse prepping for the Derby. He’s Not Joking, a Practical Joke colt, worked five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Palm Meadows Training Center, earning the fastest time of the day at that distance.
- Career highlights: Two wins in four starts at Woodbine, including the Grey Stakes (G3).
- Recent performance: Eighth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2).
- Odds: 45-1 in Vegas futures.
Meanwhile, Ferocious stands at 30-1 odds in Kentucky Derby futures from both Caesars Sportsbook and the KDFW pool 3, reflecting his strong potential in the competition.
Ferocious is shaping up as a serious Kentucky Derby contender, with his smooth stride and impressive workouts catching the attention of trainers and fans. While his next race remains uncertain, the team is focused on ensuring he’s in peak condition for the Derby trail. Alongside other promising horses like He’s Not Joking, the road to the Kentucky Derby is already heating up with anticipation.
