Kent Sweezey, a well-known horse trainer, is making a big move by bringing a team of horses to Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the winter season. After years of racing success on the East Coast and in California, Sweezey is excited to establish his presence at Oaklawn, one of the most prestigious tracks in the country. This is the first time Sweezey will base a string of horses at Oaklawn, and he’s ready to make his mark.
Sweezey’s Background in Racing
Kent Sweezey has been part of horse racing for many years. In 2016, he visited Oaklawn as an assistant for trainer Jimmy Jerkens, helping Grade 1 winner Effinex secure a victory in the Oaklawn Handicap. Although that trip only lasted two days, it left a lasting impression.
Sweezey started his own training career in 2017 and has since built a successful operation, recording 321 career wins so far. Based primarily at Churchill Downs and Monmouth Park, Sweezey has also sent horses to Del Mar for its summer meet, showcasing his ability to succeed at top tracks.
A New Chapter at Oaklawn
For the 2024-25 season, Sweezey is wintering at Oaklawn for the first time. After wrapping up the fall meet at Churchill Downs, Sweezey claimed six horses with the support of Rachel and Sean Gerson, owners of Starry Night Racing. These horses, all claimers, make up the initial team Sweezey brought to Oaklawn.
“We’re happy to be here,” Sweezey said. “That’s the No. 1 thing.”
With a solid start, Sweezey’s horses have already earned two third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish in their first three starts. Sweezey plans to stay active in claiming races throughout the season, having invested $250,000 in new horses.
Balancing Operations Across the Country
While focusing on Oaklawn, Sweezey continues to manage 40 horses at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida. This dual operation reflects his expanding reach in the racing world. By establishing a presence at Oaklawn, Sweezey is positioning himself for even greater success, thanks to the track’s high purse structure and competitive racing environment.
Looking Ahead for Sweezey
Sweezey’s decision to bring his team to Oaklawn marks an exciting new phase in his career. The move demonstrates his commitment to growth and his ability to adapt to new opportunities. With a strong team and a focus on claiming races, Sweezey is ready to make the most of his first winter season at Oaklawn.
As Sweezey continues to expand his operations, racing fans can expect to see more of his horses in major races across the country. His growing partnership with Starry Night Racing highlights his dedication to building a winning team and making a name for himself in the competitive world of horse racing.
